Inspired by mid-century modern lighting, string art, and tensegrity sculptures, the Andromeda Lighting Series is a testament to the fusion of art and functionality. Created by Cole Gerst, a renowned designer and author, these sculptural lamps are a result of a unique and experimental design process that brings together old-world craftsmanship and new technology.

The Andromeda Lighting Series is part sculpture and part lamp, with intricately woven string crisscrossing between a wooden frame, creating captivating geometric patterns. The design process for these lamps involved creating cardboard models to perfect the shapes. Once satisfied, plywood was laser-cut with nodes in the notches, allowing all the parts to seamlessly snap together. The smaller notches were strategically placed to hold the string and create the intricate patterns. The standard color palettes were inspired by the beautiful color combinations found in nature.

The Andromeda Lighting Series comes in various sizes, ranging from 8x8x13" to 12x12x31". Depending on the model, they can be used as pendant lamps or floor/table lamps, complete with a plug or ceiling rose for easy installation.

When turned off, these lamps serve as stunning pieces of art. However, once illuminated, they transform the room, casting mesmerizing geometric patterns on the walls. The Andromeda Lighting Series was developed over the course of a year in Portland, Oregon. The design process involved studying the works of renowned architects, including Buckminster Fuller, as well as exploring string-art sculptures from the 50s and 60s. The objective was to let the form of the lamps reveal their purpose, resulting in conversation pieces that serve both as art and functional lighting.

The design team faced several challenges during the creation of the Andromeda Lighting Series. The most time-consuming aspect was stringing and creating pleasing patterns and color combinations. Additionally, perfecting the nodes and adjusting them to accommodate different thicknesses of plywood required meticulous attention to detail.
